Frequently Asked Questions:
-
SR&ED is an acronym – it stands for the Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax incentive program.
The SR&ED program is the largest single source of federal support to help encourage R&D in Canada, and it provides $3 billion in tax incentives to over 20,000 claimants each year.
To participate, business owners must prepare tax claims that give a highly detailed and accurate summary of the work completed, and that are compliant with the laws, policies, and procedures laid out by the Government/CRA.
These claims can be time consuming to prepare, and if there is missing or inaccurate information, the claim can be rejected, or the claimant could face penalty. Plus, claims can (and often are) subject to audit, which can be daunting if you’re not entirely confident with your preparation process. That’s why we’re here – to ensure you have all the expertise and support you need to get the biggest return possible, with no penalties or rejected claims. Plus, when you work with Ward Weber Associates, your claims are virtually audit-proofed.

The SR&ED program provides financial incentives to help fund your company’s research, development and experiments - the ongoing work that keep your company competitive, and your field moving forward.
If eligible for SR&ED, your company could deduct certain expenditures to reduce your tax liability this fiscal year, or even carry the expenditures forward indefinitely. You can also receive the benefits in the form of an investment tax credit, or a reduction of taxes payable.
In short, SR&ED – if filed with the right know-how – means more cash in your company’s pocket to fund even bigger projects down the line.

The easiest way to find out if you qualify for the SR&ED program is to book a free, no obligation consultation with us. Through our conversation, we’ll be able to tell you whether or not your work qualifies you for reimbursement.
However, to be eligible for the program, your work must first fall into one of these three categories:
Experimental Development: work done to overcome an obstacle that exists in a field, for which there is no known solution, for the purpose of creating new, or improving existing materials, devices, or processes.
Applied Research: work done to advance scientific knowledge with a specific practical application in view. This work is usually conducted in a laboratory setting.
Basic Research: work done to advance scientific knowledge without a specific practical application in view. Typically, this work is conducted by an educational body, like a college or university.
